A visit to the Sannio of Benevento is a Journey through history to recall the past… the routes are not made of space but of time;  a time to re-discover distant shores; to discover how life was like long ago, but also a reflection on how life may be in the future…

Benevento, the Queen of Sannio, has a plurimillenarian history; she is like a noble lady of ancient lineage with signs that mark a great past made of elegance and grace. The history of Benevento is full of marvellous monuments and many other little things to take in consideration the memory of the ancient Samnites is far away, the town fully shows its landmarks of Roman times and later of the Longobard period.

1 Benevento

The most famous monuments of the classical period are the Arch of Traiano and the Roman Theatre


Arco di Traiano
The Traiano arch is the most impressive old monument of the town it was built between 114 and 117 AD to celebrate the opening of the new Traiano Route which linked Rome with Brindisi. It is about 15 meters high and decorated with 27 slabs of marble, on them have been sculptured nearly 400 images. The arch panels represent the most important moments of Traiano’s life and depict the origins and glorious destiny of Rome. In Middle Age the Arch became the main entrance to the city and was named Port’Aurea for its magnificence.

Teatro Romano

Roman Theatre was built under Emperor Adriano (II century AD), later adorned and restored by Caracalla (beginning of the III century AD). Nowadays the Theatre reveals its imposing structure by the curving facade that was originally composed by three orders: Tuscan, Doric and Ionic. It preserves the whole practicability and hosts shows, concerts and plays.


Chiesa di Santa Sofia

The Church of St. Sofia which belonged to the Benedictine abbey was built in the VIII B.C. century by the Longobards as a temple to their ethnicity, during that period Benevento remained the chief town of Longobardia minor. Inside the St. Sofia structure was placed the Sannio Museum, which preserves many archaeological, medieval and artistic heritage of the Samnite province. Among the halls of the Museum can be find and interesting dedication to the cult of Isis.
At the end of Benevento tour is the visit of Rector Fortress

Rocca dei Rettori
Rectors’ Fortress was built in 1321 as the Papal seat in Benevento. It stands on the ruins of an ancient Longobard small fortress and at the same time standing on the ruins of a Roman building. Recent archaeological researches have brought to light some walls of a Roman aqueduct, and of a Samnite necropolis dating back to IV century BC.

2 Cerreto Sannita

Cerreto Sannita is one of the most picturesque Samnites villages, with its peculiar urban architecture. Every corner in Cerreto has to be discovered and appreciated, along with its artistic and cultural traditions, which has earned the Orange Flag by The Italian Touring Club…

Morning: visit of Cerreto Sannita, Civic Museum of Cerreto Ceramic, lunch in a typical restaurant and transfer to the Art Institute N. Giustiniani. Here you can participate in the Artistic Ceramic Laboratories, according to a specific plan made by the director and the teachers of that school…

Evening: transfer to the hotel and free night

3 Cusano Mutri

Breakfast in hotel and transfer to

Cusano arises on the rocks of Mutria Mount; it’s a very suggestive village of Sannio Land. The best period to visit it starts in the month of May when hikes and horseback trekking begin…

Morning: meeting with your guide and visit to the Village of Cusano Mutri, the old centre, the chief church and a long healthy walk through the narrow lanes of the village, for the lovers of adventure it could be possible to reach with experts the Caccaviola caves where once can continue to do extensive tours

Lunch on the road from Cusano to Cerreto in the area up to the Annibal Bridge…

Afternoon: transfer to the Art Institute N. Giustiniani.

 

4 Pietraroja

Breakfast in hotel and transfer to
Pietraroja is a small village at 850mt, where about 350 years ago, a discovery of important fossils were found, and it has been proposed that a million of years ago there was a bog. Pietraroja hosts the Paleolab Museum which preserves one of the most important findings ever discovered in Italy before; a fossil of baby dinosaur dating more than 110 million of years ago, it preserves the interiors. Visiting the museum is an unique experience

Morning: Arrive in Pietraroja and a visit of Paleolab Museum (about 2 hours), at the end stopping to the Saint Anna church which is  isolated from the village in a natural setting.
Lunch in a typical restaurant of that area

Afternoon: transfer to the Art Institute N. Giustiniani.
Here you can take part to the Artistic Ceramic Laboratories, according to a specific plan made by the director and the teachers of that school…
Return to hotel and free night. 

 

5 Pompei

We will spend all day to visit the wonderful and sensational town of Pompei


Majestic and menacing, Vesuvius still dominates the Napolitan landscape. The 24th of August in 79 A.D. Vesuviius ‘put on a show’ with a devastating eruption which buried Pompei, Hecolaneum and Oplontis.
From the 1709 researches were made which brought to light an archaeological, artistic and historical heritage of inestimable value…

Visit to the Pompei excavation and lunch on the road, return to Benevento in the late afternoon

6 Cerreto Sannita

Breakfast in hotel and leaving for Cerreto Sannita, here they can take part to the last ceramic art lesson at the Institute of Art, all the participants could learn about the technic of baking and cooking of ceramic, besides during the morning will be prepared the exhibition stands, for all the products realized during the days… brunch and opening of the stands in the afternoon. In this hours could be possible to sell the works and the benefit will be used to buy new tolls for the ceramic-work and decoration.
The night will end with popular songs and music and tasting of typical products belonging to the Titerno river area.
